Climate change causes more severe weather

Call it “Snowpocalypse” or “Snowageddon,” the mid-Atlantic and Northwestern U.S. have seen winter storms this year that rival anything in decades. Scientists agree that this kind of extreme weather is consistent with climate change research.

Fact: Climate change causes more frequent and severe snowstorms

Record snowstorms need two things: temperatures below freezing, and very high humidity. On a planet warmer by a few degrees on average, the Northeast US will still have plenty of days below freezing; the big difference will be warmer seas producing higher levels of moisture in the air — and therefore more severe cold-season storms.1

Fact: We can expect more extreme weather

Scientists tell us that climate change has already led to more extreme weather in the United States and we can expect stronger hurricanes, more wildfires, heatwaves and droughts, to name a few.2 The cost of inaction could reach half a trillion dollars a year.3

The 15 Most Heinous Climate Villains

The worst and most vile of the corporate-funded climate science deniers responsible for subverting public understanding of climate change, and risking civilization.

Don Blankenship1) Don Blankenship, CEO Massey Energy

Corporate teat: Massey Energy is the fourth largest coal company in the US.

Most egregious lie: “The Greeniacs are taking over the world.”

Comeuppance: The Greeniacs do take over the world, and use Blankenship to fertilize a rooftop garden.

2) George Will, Columnist

Corporate teats: The Republican Party, a catchall for corporate polluters, his wife, rapacious swine in general, and anyone who cites Ronald Reagan to justify his massive carbon footprint.

3) James Inhofe, Senator from Oklahoma

Corporate teats: Seven figures from Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Conoco Phillips and anyone willing to pay for his “campaign expenses.”

Most egregious lie: “You know, God’s still up there. We’re now going through a cooling spell.”

beyond magical thinking: how to really make change happen

change-is a work in progress…it just doesn’t magically materialize………guess the attention span- and stick-to-it-tiveness of some….is sort of lacking?

Beyond Magical Thinking: How to Really Make Change Happen

Successful political movements do not spring fully formed. They require long-term, nuts-and-bolts organizing.

Since the summer of 2003, I’ve crisscrossed the country speaking at colleges and theaters and bookstores, first with The Weather Underground documentary and, starting in March of this year, with my book, Underground:  My Life with SDS and the Weathermen (William Morrow, 2009). In discussions with young people, they often tell me, “Nothing anyone does can ever make a difference.”

fair and balanced (and phony) science

Fair and Balanced (and Phony) Science

Climate change is already too real for many around the world, from the citizens of the Maldives and Bangladesh, whose countries are on the verge of drowning, to the residents of Southern California, who now must routinely cope with wildfires.

And be sure to ignore the mounting evidence, most notably the actual temperature studies released by the United Nations this week, that proves beyond a doubt that the Earth is warming as carbon-based industrialization spreads across the developing nations.

It is hardly surprising that Fox News would emphasize the use of terms like trick in a stolen message from the University of East Anglia without mentioning that the word has an innocent meaning when used by scientists. It is even less surprising that in their zeal to exploit those e-mails and influence public opinion, Fox News crew members would concoct their own stupid deception.
